Xunantunich (shoe-nan-tu-nich) or maiden of the rocks is positioned across the Mopan River and in the middle of tropical rainforest. This Archaeological Site is a Classic Period ceremonial Centre which features Plazas, Palaces and temples as well as a modern Museum. The mounts were first occupied as early as the ceramic phase of the pre-classic period (400 and 200 BC); yet it was not until 600 AD that Xunantunich was used as a ceremonial site and became of great importance in the region.
This Archaeological Site also has the second largest temple, El Castillo, which arises 130 feet
from plaza level making it the second largest temple in Belize. Once atop El Castillo, you experience a 360 degrees scenery of the peaks and valleys below. Your expert guide will be providing detailed information about the socio-political, religious, cultural and beliefs of this ancient civilization.
